Types of Zirconia Ceramics Suitable for Machining into Components
Zirconia ceramics have high toughness, making them less prone to edge chipping during CNC machining. They are well-suited for CNC processing into various shaped components.
The zirconia ceramics used for manufacturing parts mainly include yttria-stabilized zirconia (white) and magnesia-stabilized zirconia (yellow), with yttria-stabilized zirconia being more commonly used in practical applications. The hardness and wear resistance are approximately 20% lower than alumina, but the toughness is about 25% higher than that of alumina.
YSZ has a density of 6.02 g/cm³, comparable to stainless steel, making it the densest ceramic material available. The sintered surface exhibits excellent natural smoothness（Ra1.0） and can achieve mirror-like finish through processing (surface roughness Ra0.2μm). This smooth surface reduces friction coefficient and provides resistance to chemical corrosion, contamination adhesion, and oxidation. The surface quality also ensures effective sealing between components.
YSZ’s combination of high surface finish, wear resistance, and high toughness makes it particularly suitable for equipment components operating at temperatures below 350°C, including:

Magnesia-stabilized Zirconia (MSZ) Components
MSZ ceramic components are suitable for applications in higher operating temperature environments.MSZ exhibits a yellow color and differs from YSZ primarily in its enhanced high-temperature performance, which is approximately 7-8 times higher than that of YSZ. This property makes MSZ particularly suitable for CNC machining into mechanical components and crucible materials that require both toughness and high-temperature resistance.
