What is Aluminum Nitride Ceramic?
Aluminum nitride (AlN) ceramic is a synthetic compound formed by applying high pressure in a vacuum furnace and sintering under a nitrogen atmosphere. It is commonly produced in the form of plates and structural components. Composed primarily of covalent bonds in a hexagonal wurtzite structure, aluminum nitride ceramics are non-toxic and environmentally safe.
AlN ceramics exhibit higher flexural strength compared to functional ceramics such as dielectric ceramics and barium titanate ceramics. However, their strength is slightly lower than structural ceramics like zirconia and silicon nitride ceramics. Notably, aluminum nitride ceramics have a thermal expansion coefficient closely matching silicon and gallium nitride, making them highly compatible and suitable for integration into various systems. They demonstrate excellent thermal stability up to 800°C but begin to oxidize at temperatures beyond this threshold.
The High Thermal Conductivity of Aluminum Nitride Ceramics
The high thermal conductivity of aluminum nitride ceramics is attributed to its unique phonon-based heat conduction mechanism. While single crystals can achieve thermal conductivity values as high as 319 W/m·K, the thermal conductivity of sintered aluminum nitride ceramics ranges between 70 and 270 W/m·K. Aluminum nitride ceramic substrates typically exhibit thermal conductivity in the range of 170 to 190 W/m·K.
During high-temperature sintering, lattice and oxygen defects may form, impacting thermal performance. To achieve higher thermal conductivity, it is crucial to minimize oxygen concentration during the sintering process. Research indicates that keeping the oxygen concentration below 0.75% at the atomic level reduces lattice defects, resulting in denser materials with enhanced thermal conductivity.

1.
